Meet Nigel Porter

 

Every child deserves someone who believes in them.

 

When I first became a teacher, I thought my job was to teach English and Maths.

Over the years, I've realised it's much more than that.

 

The children I've worked with have taught me one simple truth:

Confidence changes everything.

 

I've seen children arrive convinced they "can't do maths", that they're "not a reader", or that they'll "never pass their exams". Many have experienced anxiety, struggled with dyslexia, lost confidence at school or simply stopped believing in themselves.

 

Time and again, I've watched something remarkable happen.

When a child feels understood...

When they're taught in a way that works for them...

When someone believes in them before they believe in themselves...

Confidence begins to grow.

 

And once confidence grows, learning follows.

 

That's why I founded Mr Porter Tutoring.

Not simply to help children achieve better grades, but to help them rediscover what they're capable of.

 

My Approach

 

Every child who walks through our doors brings their own story, strengths and challenges.

 

There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to education, so there shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all approach to tutoring.

 

That's why every lesson is carefully adapted to the individual learner.

Some children need structure.

Some need reassurance.

Some need challenge.

Some simply need someone to remind them that they can succeed.

 

My role is to discover what each child needs and create an environment where they can thrive.

 

The Mr Porter Method

 

Over many years of teaching, I've gradually developed what has become The Mr Porter Method.

 

It's built around a simple belief:

Children learn best when they feel confident, safe and understood.

Everything we do is guided by four stages:

 

Belong

Children need to feel valued before they can truly engage with learning.

 

Learn

Teaching should be carefully adapted to each learner's needs.

 

Grow

Small successes build confidence, resilience and independence.

 

Achieve

Academic success becomes the natural outcome of growing confidence.

This philosophy shapes every lesson, every conversation with parents and every decision we make.

 

Qualifications & Experience

 

Education has always been my passion, and I have continued to develop both my teaching practice and academic understanding throughout my career.

 

My qualifications include:

• BA (Hons) English Language & Children's Literature

• BA (Hons) Leisure Studies & Environmental Sciences

• PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

• Master of Education (MEd) specialising in Applied Linguistics and Functional Grammar

 

Over the years I have supported hundreds of children across primary and secondary education, including learners preparing for the 11+, GCSE English and Maths, Functional Skills, and children with dyslexia, additional learning needs and those educated outside of mainstream school.

 

Beyond the Classroom

 

One of the greatest privileges of my work is seeing children discover that they are capable of more than they ever imagined.

 

Some arrive quietly, avoiding eye contact.

Some tell me they hate reading.

Some apologise before attempting a question because they're expecting to get it wrong.

 

Watching those same children begin to volunteer answers, read with confidence, tackle challenging problems and smile when they succeed never loses its magic.

 

Those moments remind me why I started Mr Porter Tutoring.

Because education isn't only about qualifications.

It's about changing how children see themselves.

 

Looking Ahead

 

Mr Porter Tutoring has grown from one teacher supporting local families into something much bigger.

 

Our vision is to create a network of Learning Hubs where exceptional teachers deliver The Mr Porter Method, ensuring that every child experiences the same caring, confidence-building approach, wherever they learn.

 

My hope is that every family who joins us feels they have found more than a tutor.

 

They've found a place where their child is understood, encouraged and inspired to achieve extraordinary things.
