11+ Exam in Torbay
Mr Porter Tutoring is a tutoring service dedicated to helping students succeed in their 11+ exams. With a range of services including small groups and one-on-one tutoring, 11+ courses and exam techniques, we provide a personalised learning experience designed to help each student reach their full potential.

In Torbay, there are three Grammar Schools:

Torquay Girls Grammar School
Spires College also has a selective and non-selective intake.
The 11+ selective test takes place on a Saturday in mid-September for students starting Year 6. To take the test, students must register by mid July.

Entrance test date - Saturday 19 September 2026
Results notification - On or shortly after 12 October 2026
Common Application Form (CAF) deadline - 31 October 2026
Very important:
Registering for the test does not apply for a school place.
You must also complete your local authority’s Common Application Form.
Exam content
Test 1 - GL Style English test 50 minutes long.
Test 2 - GL Style Maths test 50 minutes long.

Pass mark - you should be aiming for 70%+ pass mark on your 11+ mock tests.
The selection process
Students will receive a standardised score based on their age combining both papers.
For Churston, the top 168 scores will be eligible for a space.
For Torquay Boys Grammar School, the top 150 scores will be eligible for a space.
For Torquay Girls Grammar School, the top 150 scores will be eligible for a space.
Based on student scores, parents will be notified by letter mid-October, whether an application to a Grammar School is likely to be successful and to which one. Applications must then be made to the local education authority by 31st October.
You will hear if you are successful on National Allocation Day on 1st March.
